Assessment Committee

Minutes:  21 November, 2006

9:00-10:00 am, Room 102.

Present:  George Drew (facilitator), Kathy Bailey, Sue Brennan, Dan Herschel, Kristie LeBlanc

·        Discussion of goals & timeline—somewhat up in the air.  We decide that we would prefer to implement local assessment plans rather than another packaged or standardized assessment for Grade 12, as being more relevant & providing more motivation to students

·        Dan proposes providing a framework of suggestions regarding assessment rather than the committee actually implementing a schoolwide plan (potentially based on Vermont Framework of Standards).  Let administration ultimately decide what to implement.  All agree.

·        George:  Points out that different individuals have different ideas of what “assessment” means.  Dan proposes adding a definition to our framework.

Goal 1:  Examine other assessment plans/packages to see what other schools are doing.

·        Jeff provided handouts re. approaches in Boston public schools; we will read for next meeting

·        George will obtain permission from administration for Sue to call Barre Town & Barre City to determine what they are doing, as well as possibly a few high schools (Montpelier?)

Goal 2:  Recruit more members for the committee, as scope of assignment is extensive & potentially will affect all departments/staff at school.

·        Departments already represented:  English, Math, World Language.

·        Kristie will compose an invitation to all faculty/staff to be placed in mailboxes asking people to come (even once or twice) from other departments.

·        Kristie will place something in the announcements.

·        If response to invitations is poor, possible option to get feedback from Leadership Committee or Department Heads as to whether they would be willing to poll their departments.

Next meeting will be January 10th, 2006.
