Summary of March 13, 2008 Climate committee meeting
The climate committee met on Wednesday, March 13, 2008 to consider what further actions needed to be taken on suggestions for senior privileges. Below is the list of privileges that were being considered by the committee
1. Open campus lunch
2. Senior Parking lot
3. A Spring assembly at which Seniors should get to do something fun like a water balloon fight
4. Seniors get in to some athletic events free; Discounts to athletic events
5. Seniors get a one time discount on items that the Booster club sells (t-shirts, etc.)
6. Sit at assembly in the red chairs up front (only seniors)
7. A Senior spot in cafeteria at lunch
8. Once each quarter the Green Room gives a special discount to Seniors
9. School newspaper highlights a male and female Senior in each edition
The expectation of the climate committee is not to make these things happen. That will be left to the students to pursue. But the committee felt it could assist the students in making contact with the appropriate persons.
The following decisions were reached
1. Concerning open campus lunch: A point of clarification about limits was brought up. For safety issues the committee could support eating in a designated area outside the cafeteria. The committee will seek input from Mr. Sedore and Mr. Hennessey as these would be the two administrators who would be directly involved with problems a rising from this privilege. A previous conversation with individually with Mr. Philips and Mr. Kunz found no set objections but concerns about control of egress and policing of area need to be address. Tom Mc will discuss with Tom and Chris then if positive will bring it back to the student leaders to proceed.
2. Senior parking lot raised a concern because the school does not provide bussing. This is an issue that the students may wish to bring to the facility committee.
3. The committee would be willing to support a senior spring fun assembly. The window of opportunity is rapidly closing as we get closer to finals. It was felt that this was definitely something that would need to be planned by the Student Council or Class leaders. This will be communicated to our students leader and if not this year then perhaps next year.
4. Mr. Lapoint will speak with Mr. Woods about his view on senior discounts to athletics events.
5. Ms. Shadroui will make contact with Booster club concerning a one time discount on items purchased by senior. It was pointed out that the purpose of the Booster Club was to support activities and they did this by raising money from sales. So to give a discount might actually be counter productive. There might be a way to use the discount to boost sales so the topic will be broached.
6. It was determined that a reminder to faculty and staff that traditionally the red chairs were for seniors only would be easy to do as well as making a few signs for seniors only. This may not impact this year’s senior as we were unsure of any assemblies left for this year.
7. A concern was raised about the possibility that establishing a senior table at the cafeteria could exacerbate cliques with in the school. It was decided to pursue this keeping in mind the concern. Mr. Kunz felt that he would be able to set aside two tables per lunch for this purpose. Tom Mc will approach administration to get their feedback or permission to proceed
8. Tom Mc will approach Penny and Wendy about the concept of a senior discount.
9. Ms. Shadroui has already spoken to Mr. Hersel about spot light article on a male and female senior each issue and he has given his support for the idea. The next issue has already been sent to press so feature will have to wait to the issue after that.
The next meeting of the climate committee is scheduled for April 10 at 3:00PM in room 111. The agenda is open at the present time. If you have a suggestion please feel free to either attend or bring it to the attention of the climate committee.
