Curriculum Committee Minutes : (4/4/07)

  • Attendance: J. Lewis, E. Stout, Mae Gilbert, Jeff M., B. Phillips, J. Coleman, Jim, Eric
  • Ed:
    • Electrical I Proposal (Handout)
    • Only 3 in the state
    • Aimed at going straight to work after school if desired
    • Aimed for residential electricians
    • Counts as Electrical Apprenticeship I after successful completion of exam
    • Must be 18 to take exam
    • Must have 70% to pass
    • Would need both tech English and tech math?
    • Might not be able to have full tech credit if so.
  • Jeff: Need to make sure we align with standards when talking about embedded math or English credits
  • Ed: Probably enough math embedded, but not English
  • Jeff: Talk with a math teacher to make sure aligns with standards because of state exams
  • Ed: Not necessarily a good class for Jr.’s; better for Sr.’s
  • Bob:
    • Other places have done research on embedded credits
    • 4 of largest electrical Co.’s in town are putting pressure on the tech program
    • Feasibly, can we afford the program?  Cheaper starting fees than other tech programs
  • Jim:
    • Highest caliber students in the program because of the math needed to survive
    • Maybe we can get true integration with VTC?
    • Program would probably pay for itself in the first year
    • $5-8 k to outfit shop, and with other costs, $10-15 k
  • Jeff: Ed what is your role going to be?
  • Ed:
    • Like to teach it
    • Don’t know what would happen to pre-tech class
    • Electrical would take over hands on space for pre-tech
    • Maybe end pre-tech or find someone else
  • Bob: Probably fill the program right off the bat
  • Ed:
    • Contractors might donate materials, but don’t know what or how much
    • Need to set up things in room (electrical outlets) over the summer
    • Industrial work in the building?
  • John: Should put the actual electrical Co.’s in the proposal
  • Jeff:
    • Aim to submit proposal at P&C meeting 4th Monday of the month (April 23rd)
    • Ed, Jim, and Eric, please come.
  • Eric:
    • WIB is behind this
    • All night electrical programs are overenrolled
  • Jeff: Contact electrical companies to get more info
  • Ed: Could probably get them to come to the P&C meeting
  • Jeff:
    • Need at least one P&C and one board meeting to approve proposal
    • Get Trevor to come?
