Statistics
Much of your success in this class will depend upon your level of class participation. The amount you choose to participate relates directly to the amount you will get out of this class. Much of your work will be collaborative. It is important that you contribute to your group by being on task in class and respectful of everyone in the classroom.
Homework
You should spend a minimum of 60 minutes per night on homework. Because homework is essential for participation in the next day’s activities, and because failure to do homework affects your whole group, there will be NO credit given for late homework. Homework will be graded according to a 10-point scale (see attached rubric).
Notebook
You must have a three-ring binder in which to keep papers from this class. You may keep all papers in date order or you may keep papers in separate sections (i.e., notes, homework, quizzes, etc.) in date order. You may use your notebook for reference on most quizzes and tests. You will be given a notebook quiz weekly.
POWs
Problems of the Week (POWs) are difficult time-consuming problems and should be worked on a little at a time, not just the night before it is due. The POWs are not necessarily given weekly. There will be NO credit given for late POWs. POWs need to be word-processed.
Presentations
You are expected to present homework, class work, and POWs throughout the semester. Each student must have a minimum of 10 presentations per quarter.
Quizzes and Tests
You will be given quizzes on a weekly basis as well as mid-unit and final assessments (tests) during each unit.
Unit Portfolio
Once a unit has been completed, you will compile a “portfolio” of your work. In addition to work samples, you will write a cover letter in which you summarize the unit and discuss your personal growth during the unit. There will be NO credit given for a late Unit Portfolio. Unit Portfolios must be word-processed.
Absences
Attendance is crucial to success in this class. If missing class is unavoidable, it is your responsibility to get the materials for the day from either a group member or me. It is also likely that you will have to meet with me in order to make up the group class work. You will be given the amount of time for make-up work indicated in the student handbook.
Grading
I will be grading according to the following point system:
Class work – 10 points
Homework – 10 points
Presentations – 10 points
Notebook Quizzes – 50 points
Quizzes – 100 points
Tests – 200 points
POWs – 150 points
Unit Portfolio – 200 points
