RE:                   Phoenix Program/ End of Year Report

With the Phoenix Program concluding our fifth year as the alternative high school for the Barre Supervisory Union, I would like to share with the board this year's results.  Phoenix worked with 33 students this year and will graduate 22 with the class of 2003.  Once again the Phoenix Program will be a significant presence in the senior class and many of these students would not have finished school without Phoenix.

Among this year’s graduates are six new mothers who are raising their children while working and completing school through the Phoenix Program (one of these young ladies is actually working 45 hours per week and attending school while raising a child).

On another issue, I am pleased to announce that we have seen a significant drop in heroin use this past school year.  In many ways the Phoenix Program tends to see trends in negative youth behavior before the traditional high school and in this case this may be truly good news.
