TRANSPORTATION

1.0 The Spaulding High School Union District provides trans-
portation to students only for the following:

1.1 Transportation to and from home of special education
students as required by the Student's Individual
Education Plan (IEP).

1.2 Transportation for medically and/or physically
impaired students.

1.3 Transportation to and from school sponsored field trips and special activities.

1.4 Transportation of team members to and from scheduled
interscholastic athletic contests.

2.0 The Board will regularly review this policy and associated procedures.

3.0 Buses carrying school students will be considered as
extensions of the school situation. Any student whose conduct on a school bus is improper or jeopardizes the
safety of other students may have the privilege of trans-
portation suspended.

4.0 The School Board may enter into contracts with operators
of school buses. All contracts will protect the interests of the Spaulding High School Union District in
the matters of availability and condition of equipment,
schedules, suitability and health of bus drivers,
insurance provisions and costs. All contracted services
and equipment must comply with applicable Vermont and
federal law and regulations.

5.0 When private vehicles are used, insurance coverage will be provided consistent with the school district insurance
carrier's requirements. Any operator must have a valid
Vermont driver's license.

PROCEDURES

1.0 Special Education Transportation

1.1 For a special education student to be transported,
the student's individual education plan must
indicate the reason for the transportation and the
conditions under which it shall be provided.

1.2 Transportation may be provided by a contractor or by
reimbursement to the student's parents or guardians.

1.3 Transportation may include to and from the student's
home and residential education location.

1.4 Transportation may include to and from work sites
or community based training activities.

2.0 Transportation for Field Trips and School-Sponsored
Activities

2.1 All Vermont laws and regulations regarding trans-
porting students will apply.

2.2 The principal or the vocational director is
responsible for approving any transportation
arrangements for field trips and school-sponsored
activities and for assuring that there is proper
supervision.

3.0 Transportation of Medically and/or Physically Impaired
Students.

3.1 Parents/guardians of students who have temporary or
permanent medical limitations which prohibit them
from walking to and from school may request special
transportation so they may attend school.

3.2 After evaluating the request and considering all
other reasonable alternatives, the superintendent or
designee will arrange for necessary transportation.

3.3 Transportation of medically and/or physically
limited impaired students will be provided only on
a case-by-case basis, written documentation of the
need will be required from the student's physician.
The need for transportation will be periodically
reviewed for each case and will be provided only
when necessary for the student to attend school.
